A Meeting of Legends
On June 12th, my colleagues and I from the Advancement team had the honor of sitting down with what I can only describe as living legends—three remarkable women whose wisdom, resilience, and unwavering determination embody the very spirit of YWCA St. Paul.
Though we swapped crumpets and coffee for caramel popcorn and cookies, the conversation was rich with history, purpose, and passion. Women Who Paved the Way
These women have been walking the walk, talking the talk, and driving the mission of YWCA St. Paul forward since the 1950s. Their stories reminded us that our work today stands on the shoulders of those who came before us—ordinary women who broke barriers, built community, and lived the values of equity and empowerment every day.
Reflections That Resonate
As they reflected on their experiences, they shared powerful truths:
“Programs were valued,” they said.
The YWCA was “a conveyor of support,” where staff and volunteers were deeply attuned to the needs of individuals.
They spoke of bold, necessary dialogues between Black and White communities during pivotal times of social change—moments when YWCA St. Paul stood as a bridge and a beacon.
It was clear: the mission to eliminate racism and empower women wasn’t just words. It was lived, led, and advanced by women like them—with courage and conviction.
A Living Legacy
Their stories are not only our history—they are our call to action.
We are humbled by you, Elaine, Gini, and Elaine. Thank you for paving the way.
