I truly believe that trainers and fitness instructors can help people become the best versions of themselves, not just physically, but mentally as well. I am looking forward to getting to know as many members as possible on a one-on-one basis, and teaching group classes with high tempo strength and cardio components.

I look at training like a savings plan for life. It’s something that you diligently invest in so that one day you can make a withdrawal. The investment improves your health, helps you live longer and allows you to enjoy the quality of life you deserve. My goal is to have my clients achieve their very best and get the most out of their lives. Our bodies adapt quickly. With more physical activity, our strength and energy increase. We feel stronger, less tired and less depressed. Most importantly, we feel confident in our daily lives, are more productive and better able to handle life’s stresses. I love seeing my clients grow stronger, more confident and more successful.

Emily Herman

Personal Trainer

Emily Herman Personal Trainer
Certifications: Certified Personal Trainer (American College of Sports Medicine); First aid; CPR

Education: B.S. in Biology, University of Minnesota

Specialties: Functional training, strength and conditioning, power lifting, flexibility

Experience: One-on-one and small-group personal training

I played sports in school and began seriously investing in my personal health and fitness about 14 years ago, including training in proper lifting techniques and body mechanics needed to perform labor effectively and safely. People are far more capable than they realize and working out is a great way to push yourself beyond what you ever thought possible. You will never regret going to the gym but you may regret staying home. I’ve never left the gym feeling worse than when I came in, even on days when I just can’t seem to lift that dumbbell or get that extra rep in. Any workout is still better than no work out.

I love to help people find the connection between their minds and bodies. I work with people of all shapes, sizes and physical abilities. Some are athletes looking to increase flexibility, some are folks living with chronic pain, some are individuals who want to improve their strength and overall quality of life. At any age and at any level of fitness, I believe we can continue to feel better and move through our days more easily and with greater enjoyment.

I incorporate Pilates principles throughout my daily life and continue to build on my teacher training with advanced education, including a restorative exercise specialist program focusing on alignment and biomechanics of natural movement. One of my favorite quotes is, “Don’t die before discovering all that your body is truly capable of!” Our bodies are far more malleable and self-healing than we might realize, and I love helping people look beyond mainstream fitness when it comes to lifelong, sustainable health and wellness. My goal is to keep people safe while challenging them to progressively build strength, flexibility and mobility.

Zak Trimble

Education: Bachelor’s degree in General Education & Human Development, Bowling Green State University

Specialties: Water safety, competitive and survival strokes, conditioning

Experience:  16 years of competitive swimming, 11 years of teaching swimming lessons, six years of swim coaching.

Swimming is not just a sport or a good workout, it is an invaluable life skill. It is important to know what to do and how to be safe around water. I like working with individual clients because it gives me a chance to see them grow and develop as a swimmer. To see someone go from afraid of the water to swimming laps is a great feeling.

Grayci Kangas-Olson

Certifications: Red Cross Lifeguard

Specialties: Competitive and synchronized swim instruction

Experience: More than 15 years of competitive swimming, one year as an assistant swim coach, seven years of teaching one-on-one and small-group swimming lessons

I grew up in northern Minnesota and find that it is very important we learn how to swim here in Minnesota with all of our wonderful lakes. I like being able to watch the progress of students learning to swim and growing to like the water more and more as they learn. I hope that people who come and learn to swim come out with the confidence to swim in our gorgeous lakes.

Jackson Fawcett

picture of Jackson Fawcett, Swim InstructorCertifications: Red Cross Lifeguard

Specialties: Beginner swim instruction

Experience: Four years of competitive swimming, one year of teaching swimming lessons

My goal with my students is not only to make them competent in the pool, but also to teach them through swimming to be proud of their work and help them learn that slowing down and taking the time to learn something right is an invaluable skill. I am always looking forward to the next lesson and thinking about the best ways to teach what I know.

Shayne Stone

Certifications: Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Biopsychology, Monmouth College

Specialties: Beginning and advanced stroke development, competitive swimming

Experience: 13 years of competitive swimming, eight years of teaching swimming lessons

I have been swimming competitively for more than a decade and swam for a Division III college. I enjoy seeing kids improve at such a rapid pace and really find their niche in competitive swimming. It is about the process. Moving in water can be awkward and really difficult but after some more experience, it can be a lifelong activity.

Contact our Aquatics Supervisor at 651-265-0756 or aquatics@ywcaofstpaul.org to get started with private swim lessons!
